If you want to stay fit but hate going to the gym, I have some solutions for you. I know doing a fixed routine every time can be boring and difficult. There are so many fun ways to get fit, you won’t even realize you’re exercising! It took me a while to actually like exercising, so before the routines I do now I used to partake in many fun activities to stay healthy.
If you love to dance and listen to dance music, Zumba is perfect for you. Zumba is dancing to burn calories and is super fun in any time of the year. The classes usually take place indoors and if you don’t want to pay for classes you can always look up Zumba dance videos online! You’ll have so much fun dancing that you’ll forget you’re doing it for exercise. If you are bad at dancing, then you’re attention will be more on trying to get the moves right than it will be the exercise! I started Zumba classes when I was around 12 years old because I loved to dance and hated the gym. If you’re looking for a fun activity to get you moving, this is a great idea. However, if you are already a pretty active person, this may not be the workout you’re looking for, as it targets people who don’t get much activity on a regular basis and want a fun way to get moving. Zumba classes are offered at most fitness and wellness centers, such as the YMCA and your local gym.
Taking a scenic route is a great way to exercise! You get lost in nature and the views which makes you not realize how much work you’re putting in. There are many trails that exist and if you live close to a mountain range, that’s even better. Having a few trails close by and far away will help you mix up your routine and have more fun getting active! It is hard to hike in the wintertime, so I would take advantage of the warm weather to partake in this fun activity! Some trails are harder than others, so if you are a beginner there are a few things you should keep in mind. If you are planning a hiking trip, go with friends! It’s always more fun to talk with friends who will motivate you to keep going and keep things fun! You should also bring a snack/meal depending on how long you are planning on hiking. In the warm weather, it’s better to start early in the morning so you don’t burn up in the middle of the hike. Speaking of burning up, bring sunscreen! It’s important to stay protected while being active. If the trail you are going on is very rocky, you may need to invest in a pair of hiking shoes. For newbies, I would start with some beginner trails and work your way up. AllTrails is a great website and app to find trails near you!
Workouts From Online Coaches
One thing I did the most when I didn’t have a drivers license was following workouts from Youtubers or coaches on fitness apps. This is something I still do today when I’m bored of the same old routine. There are so many videos you can find that will fit your need. When I didn’t have equipment, I would search for bodyweight workouts. When I wanted to build more muscle in targeted areas, I could find hundreds of videos with different exercises to do! Some of my favorite youtube channels to find workout from are Chloe Ting and Tiffany Rothe. One app that has workouts you can download and take with you anywhere is the Nike Training App. I’ve used this for years and I’m sure there are several other apps which you can use as well. If you know any other good videos, comment them down below!
Little things throughout the day!
Some changes to help you stay active throughout the day can greatly help you burn extra calories. One tip is to replace your chair or sofa with an exercise ball! Sitting on an exercise ball will engage your body to help you stay balanced and keep you moving while watching tv or using your laptop. Exercise balls are super fun to bounce around on and will keep you moving during typical sedentary activities. Another tip is to schedule breaks during long periods of inactivity such as work. Whenever I’m in the zone at work, I don’t realize how long I’ve been sitting in the same spot! An idea for how you can make sure you are staying active is to schedule alarms to take a 5-10 min break from work and walk around or stretch. Something I do is drink water throughout the day in a water bottle, so I’m forced to get up and fill it back up with water when it’s finished! Last tip to stay active throughout the day is to exercise while watching TV or studying! Doing ab exercises while watching your favorite show or planking while being quizzed for an exam is a great way to integrate exercise in your busy schedule. One thing my friend does is squeeze her glutes when she’s sitting in class! There’s always small things you can do throughout the day that will help you stay healthy.
